Analyzing Data, Charts & Graphs, Probability, Fractions, Spatial Visualization and Estimating.
Data Analysis and Statistics with Cuisenaire Rods:
Activities 1, 3, and 4, Comparing Handfuls, From Rods to Pyramids, and Designing Sculptures, introduce and reinforce some basic statistical concepts. For example, Comparing Handfuls on page 8 introduces students to allying data and reinforces representing data on a table and then on a bar graph.
From Rods to Pyramids on page 24 has students make more sophisticated graphs. They use the range and measures of median and mode to analyze the data. Two different graphical representations, the stem and leaf plot and histograms, are introduced in Designing Sculptures.
Probability with Cuisenaire Rods:
Activates 2, 5, and 6, Rod Probability, Cover Your Bases, and Last Rod Wins, introduce and reinforce some basic probability concepts as students make strategic decisions based on their understanding of the probability of particular outcomes when using dice and spinners.
In Rod Probability on page 16, students are introduced to tree diagrams as a method for computing simple compound events. In Cover Your Bases on page 36 and Last Rod Wins on page 42, concepts of fractions get reinforced as students create and test conjectures by playing a strategy game.
